Bureaucrats of all hides.
September 23, Itasca.
Whereas it is proven beyond a doubt that French bureaucrats are even worse than their counterparts in America.

The day so far.
September 22, Belvidere.
Errands day, and then some; to the post office to mail tag renewal, check; to the store for water and juice, throw in some strawberries for the vitamins, check; to the Salvation Army to drop off unused clothes, check; Dylan finally wakes up and off to the Mongodal for breakfast to Nicolas' excited cries, check; all this while doing laundry, stopping to put the loads in the dryer in between errands, check; hair salon right next to the laundromat, took a wild breath and scheduled an appointment for early afternoon to renew my blond, now or never - and pulled it off, check.
Made it back just in time for the show, riding my bicycle under the rain, fresh, wonderful rain on my face.

Ascencion and the snake.
September 21, Kingston.
He takes the snakes out every two weeks to thoroughly clean the cages. He just picks them up and holds them and lays them on the ground. He said he was scared the first time but got used to it; now they're like pets.
They are giant pythons.

Josh.
September 19, Vernon Hills.
Josh joined us back in late July from Cobbleskill, New York, a tattooed, lanky kid I thought wouldn't last long.
I was wrong. He works alongside Buckner with the elephant and ponies, and plans to come by next year.
He said his family is from Scotland; when he went to Ellis Island on a school trip he saw the name there, the Mac got dropped some time along the road.
Lost scooter.
September 19, Vernon Hills.
Someone took off with Dylan's scooter last night at the church's playground near the trailers.
We'd found it at a garage sale for two dollars back in Toledo, he loved it and I loved watching him on it, it made him look like a big kid already. He'd forgotten it at the playground after playing there all day; usually when that happened we would find it in the morning or someone from the circus would bring it back. No such luck this time.

Fiesta.
September 15, McHenry.
There was a party tonight after the shows to celebrate Mexico's Independence Day.
There was fiesta in the air since we arrived here, as we are staying three days on this lot, a first.

Casey and the dogs.
September 12, Harvard.
Casey started working the dog act today, after Natalie left last Sunday for family reasons.
The wisdom of babes.
September 12, Harvard.
To my comment that he could watch TV later, Nicolas answered: "There is no later, Mom."

Moving on.

Because the people of the ur-suburb of Lake in the Hills won't allow circus folks to spend the night in their community, we have gone through three towns in one day: yesterday we woke up in Elmhurst, drove to Lake in the Hills, then moved here after the shows.
Visits always give pleasure - if not the arrival, the departure (Portuguese proverb.)

The end of the day.
September 10, Elmhurst.
Suddenly the days are shorter, it is night during the second show, and cool enough for a jacket.
Suddenly the end of the circus road is near, you feel the season has gone by in a wave, movie rushes, punctuated by flashes of memory - the kids at the hospital, the beach, friends' accolades.
September and another summer gone by.
