So long, Master Kane.

July 31, Hartville.

John Kennedy Kane, our interim ringmaster, left today; John Moss is coming back from Tennessee.
I spent the day yesterday taking pictures of and recording videos of the show featuring our booming master, who was as funny and engaging off the ring as on it.

News.

July 22, Warren.

John and Reina left yesterday to go home to Knoxville, Tennessee, to bury his mother.  They'll be gone ten days so the circus has hired a ringmaster, who goes by the name John Kennedy Kane.  He has a booming voice and old-fashioned demeanor in the ring, if a style altogether different from John's.
In the elephant act, Corisa, Max Fusco's wife, is filling in for Reina.

Out-take (down by the river.)

July 22, Warren.

On being grateful.

July 22, Warren.

Listening again to the essential American Public Media show On Being, during the solitude of the early morning road, listening with joyful awareness for it is always a source of inspiration and beauty and questioning, a pause for thought in the maelstrom, and I need it so.
"Beauty is a strategy for survival."
Yes.

Down by the river.

July 21, Rock Creek.

On the road this morning.

July 21, Rock Creek.

Jeremiah went off the road in the fog of the morning somewhere on Route 534.  Nobody was hurt, and the cookhouse's truck was sent to pull him back on track.  I drove alone, as most mornings this year, one thing or another going on along the way and Fridman stays behind.  The road was familiar, although we usually do it from north to south, rolling hills and flag-wrapped porches on farmhouses, outsized barns, corn fields.  Ohio is still my favorite state to travel through.

Home for some, and other notes.

July 20, Sebring.

This is Danny's home town, and it is the first time we play it.  There was a crowd this morning around the elephants and the tigers, and there's been a steady flow of onlookers slowing down by the road behind us, peeking in.
We stopped at a FLying J this morning again, and all piled up there by the dump station, chatting up the morning.

July 16, Youngsville,.

Travel day and almost four hundred and fifty miles, tail end of it hard with the kids getting louder and zanier, left at six in the morning and arrived at eight at night, having to wait for John Moss after lunch with Jeremiah and Jacob at the Flying J truck stop just before Buffalo, the hours dragging on pitifully later on in the day.
