Briefly noted (on cats, friends and bookstores.)

In Cobleskill there was a miraculous used-books bookstore housed in an old brick town building and I thought of my friend Greg, and not only because it was called Catnap Books, but also because the man behind the wooden desk in the morning and the man there in the afternoon looked almost identical, graced with the same ample girth and gentle air, the same twinkle in their eyes, and because behind them was a series of cat posters of the sort most often favored by book lovers who also happen to be cat lovers, although a love of books and a love of cats uncannily seem to go together, and not just because the previous sentence best describes my friend Greg (but doesn't by any means wrap him up.)
Among the delicious books I found (You're only Old Once!, by Dr. Seuss) was Old Possum's Book of Practical Cats, by T.S. Eliot, who also just happens to be Greg's most beloved author's most famous book on cats ("Great book," said the second of the bookstore's emblematic anchor.)

Department of complaints.

A hundred and five miles on a Saturday, and the last downgrade the killer cherry on the hilly and curvy cake and Steve didn't have any brakes left when he got to the light at the bottom (time and again a steep and long downgrade that ends at a stoplight along New York's highway 20 - see yesterday's entry.) Don't know what happened to the Kelly Miller Circus rule that if it was a drive of a hundred or above we had the rest of the day off.
And so we passed through Richfield Springs three times in quite as many days (a repeated peek at those indecent Victorian mansions the reward of the weary circus traveler slash old homes aficionada.)

Smoke alarm.

The trailer's brakes were smoking this morning, after just one little downgrade; they get stuck on the wheels, the same as what happened on the driver side back in Missouri when a wheel went flying off into the highway after the burning brake literally melt it off the axle.

Renato's accident.
July 13, Richfield Springs.
One of these scattered milestones of the circus road, the McDonald's across the street and we all went there last year too, Josie and her train of kids, the Mosses, the Lunas with Yolanda and Little Miss Princess Dayesca, Renato and Eric and the place was just humming.
The space in front of the Poemas trailer, behind ours, was humming last night with meat cooking over the fire and people enjoying an impromptu get-together, talking circus.
There was talk about Renato, who two days ago fell in the wheel of destiny act with his family and broke his ankle on one side and his toes and heel on the other.
It is hard to summon the accident; he is the family's star, and he must be in such pain.

This morning I woke up an hour early and went walking on the nature trail behind the circus.
The most wonderful thing about our traveling life is getting up at the crack of dawn to be able to walk the woods; the worst is not staying around to enjoy them more than an instant.

Carla's last finale.

She visited with Gigi today from Canada where she has been working with another circus that is closing down. Dylan and Nicolas will enjoy their oldest friend once more.
