Horse practice.

May 20, Lexington.

The Poemas and Armando's family practice the horses together every day, and Zefta and Cathy have been working on a routine of their own.

A mother's anguish.

May 18, Mechanicsburg.

Maximiliano and his young family left at call time today. In the foggy rainy morning, as she was getting the trailer ready for the day's journey, I asked Susana whether one ever got used to the farewells.
She said no, she was whispering.
In her face I saw my anguish.

Birthdays.

May 16, Coldwater.

Today the Fusco family threw a birthday party for both Argio, Armando and Natalia's son, and Elijah, the son of Maximiliano, one of the twin brothers. It was in the pony ride tent because there wasn't enough time to do it in the big top with the show early on a week end. That turned out to be a godsend as the pony ride tent is the perfect size to feel cozy yet comfortable, and is rather like a little circus castle.
The twins will be working their juggling act at Circus World in Baraboo, Wisconsin, starting this week, and Maximiliano and his family are leaving tomorrow.

At the Fuscos - Renzo and his little brother.

At the Fuscos - three generations of women.

May 16, Coldwater.

Susana (second from left,) the matron of the Fusco family, was showing Corissa(third from left,) Maximiliano's wife, who's nineteen, how to make rice the Argentinian way, as the women cooked for the birthday party.
Corissa doesn't speak Spanish so Zefta has to translate. Delena, the youngest of the Fusco children, also speaks English but less fluently.

Circus fare.

May 13, Waterloo.

Lawn gone.

May 13, Waterloo.

It's been raining all week and the forecast is for it to continue until Saturday (all kid rules concerning TV watching are out the door.)
We are packed one behind another on the parking lot in front the church where the circus is setting up but the tent is still being raised on grass. Pristine lawn, it was. It will be a muddy mess by the time we are gone tomorrow.
It was so soggy Lisa had to be called upon to pull the tent truck around.

At the restaurant.

May 8, Kokomo.

John North arrived a few days ago and invited everybody in the circus to a restaurant tonight to celebrate Cinco de Mayo.
There is no circus like Kelly Miller Circus.
We packed a Golden Corral and stuffed ourselves silly. At a buffet Castro always jokes that he won't stop before eating seven plates (full of mostly meat,) but at number four he had to capitulate.

Temptations.

May 7, Lebanon.

Delena Fusco practiced the Silk Road dance with Cathy and Tatiana today as Delena prepares to take over Jessi's place. The Silk Road costumes were too great a visual temptation as Cathy swirled around like a dervish.
Jessi is leaving tomorrow, the new teacher arrived today (I haven't met her yet.)

The news about Dylan.

May 5, Pittsboro.

There is always something.
I spent most of the day in the ER with Dylan.
In the end we found out he has asthma, and was having an acute attack. We had taken him to a clinic in the morning to check on this ongoing cough he's had, and the cold he had just caught yesterday playing outside with Flaco until late, and as we got home he started having difficulty breathing. Now he's set with a vaporizer and treatment for the lung infection that triggered the attack, and I'm learning of people who turn out to have asthma too, like Fridman's mother, and Sheyla's daughter, and other kids around the circus, so I don't feel as bad about the condition.
It was another stressful day on the road, but the staff at the ER was wonderful, especially the attending physician, a woman who must have been ten years my junior and exulted such joy and trust.
And Dylan got to watch cartoons on TV all afternoon.

Migraine.

May 3, Clinton.

A migraine headache has had me pretty much grounded for the last two days.
Unfortunately it doesn't look like today is going to be any different; feeling trampled, and blinded, the gradual increasing of the pain as the day goes by, the false improvement as night nears. The migraines and their cohort of nausea and discomfort had visited me after Nicolas was born, then gradually faded away. I can only hope that this is just a freak outbreak.
