Casey started working the dog act today, after Natalie left last Sunday for family reasons.

Because the people of the ur-suburb of Lake in the Hills won't allow circus folks to spend the night in their community, we have gone through three towns in one day: yesterday we woke up in Elmhurst, drove to Lake in the Hills, then moved here after the shows.
Visits always give pleasure - if not the arrival, the departure (Portuguese proverb.)

The end of the day.
September 10, Elmhurst.
Suddenly the days are shorter, it is night during the second show, and cool enough for a jacket.
Suddenly the end of the circus road is near, you feel the season has gone by in a wave, movie rushes, punctuated by flashes of memory - the kids at the hospital, the beach, friends' accolades.
September and another summer gone by.

Structure.

Sara armed a trapeze in front of her trailer and practiced with Cathy.
The kids played around.
People gawked from their cars, stopped in traffic.

We drove the loop on our way to the lot this morning.
I probably should not have been taking pictures while driving a one-ton truck with my two kids in it in city freeway traffic (Sunday morning traffic but still) but when will I get such a wondrous view again? There are no days off this time around in Chicagoland with Kelly Miller so I doubt we'll have time to go sightseeing.
Speaking of days off, the route slip said "Happy Labor Day!"
There are two shows on Monday, as usual - and three today.

Joining the movement.

Thanks to Jo, Tavana, Aaron and all the circus folks who contributed for the surprising success of the Kelly Miller Circus recycling program's first official day!
After I had shamefully given up on trying to get the circus to share my commitment to recycling, it was Little Sister Jo and later Tavana who started things up again, and at the end of the day yesterday I gleefully stuffed the circus van was full of cans and bottles and cardboard for Aaron to drive to a recycling center up the street.
This was a lighthearted day for me, after my friend Geraldine's virtual reappearance. We are green by necessity in the traveling circus business (thirty-gallon-a-day water use, no electricity at night, most cooking done on premises) but this really brings us full circle, if one can say so in a tented show.

A blast from the past.

There was a time bomb in my inbox this morning.
I first noticed in the Followers section of this blog, someone who just joined claiming to be a "blast from the past, punk days." Then there was an email.
And then I was blasted into the past all right, circa 1985 in Paris, a pyramid of girls (the collage on my trunk/purse with an American football player) with punk hairdos (and I even have kind of a similar one, what were the chances? - only I lost the baby cheeks) posing carefully for posterity (but were we really thinking of that back then? how could we have been thinking of looking back from so far away when next week-end and the band we so wanted to see was the sole horizon of our lives?)
The photographer was my friend Geraldine Gautier, she just came back in my life, and U couldn't be happier.
A blast from the past, a feast only our new intimately connected lives can offer.

Sara doesn't have much choice than to bring Gigi to finale. She's got her costumes and even tights, and now she won't hear of not going. When Nellie was gone Flaco joined her too.
