Early morning musings.

June 17, Cortland Manor.

Early morning musings.

June 17, Cortland Manor.

Last night I erased by accident half of the pond pictures I took so this morning I got up an hour early and went back. There was no way to capture the same scene, only more opportunities to muse about light and color and lines.

Problem lots, tranquil vistas.

June 16, Brewster.

This was what we call politely a "problem lot."
Nails and debris across the lot. No water. A lonely but vocal animal rights protester, in her seventies. Something about pond water for the animals, although it got resolved after all. And the tent was set up on astro turf, so in the end it was the neatest presentation we've ever had.
And the ponds offered tranquil vistas.

Comeback.

June 14, Greenwood Lake.

Adrian Poema hurt his knee three weeks ago jumping over a puddle backstage during a severe storm and hasn't been able to work since, meaning no Risley act for the whole family of course. Today they started again, minus Nellie this time (she went home to Florida yesterday for a week.) Delena will help them.

Broken.

June 14, Greenwood Lake.

There was a wonderful yard sale in Lambertville on Saturday, and among other things I found a candelabra I just loved.
Then I broke it.

Mesh.

June 12, Ringoes.

Last ditch attempt at getting a picture of Casey and Shonti.
Nice mesh.

Circus salon.

June 11, Plumsteadville.

I was at the hair salon this morning, crossing path with Nikki, and here come Buckner and Tavana.
When I went back for Dylan, there were Nellie, Mariana, Cathy and Zefta waiting.

Round the mulberry bush.

June 10, Plumsteadville.

There is a mulberry bush in our front yard.
We all ate some, but Nicolas looks best in crimson.

All bets are off.

June 10, Plumsteadville.

The World Cup starts tomorrow and the whole circus came together to draw a team for each and bet for a winner (Armando drew Cameroon twice, to general hilarity.)
It reminded me of Circus Chimera, where the same ritual went on in 2002, somewhere in New Mexico.

Raising the flags.

The painters.

June 10, Plumsteadville.

There were two local painters, Peter Hunt and Robert Beck, this morning around the tent.
Robert Beck actually lives from his art; he has a gallery nearby in Lambertville, New Jersey, and travels to different landscapes around the country and the world.
I'm jealous.

Out-take (Dylan at The Shore.)

June 9, Pemberton.

Unearthed.

June 9, Pemberton.

Unearthed some pictures of my friends Greg and Sally taken last year in their old home of eighteen years, now left behind, for no other reason than I was thinking of them.

The Shore.

June 8, Mays Landing.

We swung by Atlantic City to take a dip in the sea.
Ugly casinos, pink tops and golden years by the shore.

Annual pilgrimages.

June 7, Bridgeton.

To Mary Ellen's for our now annual visit, after driving around Bridgeton and Millville to satisfy my New Jersey sightseeing craving of a whole year.

To the diner.

June 6, Woodstown.

Nice crowds here, nice change, and they were a good audience too.
There was supposed to be big storms and even tornadoes coming on so we called off the birthday BBQ we had planned and went to the Woodstown Diner instead with John and his family. When Jackie walked in we invited her over.
Nicolas kept asking for pancakes but when they came he wouldn't eat them, claiming these were not pancakes. We figured he must have meant cake.
We had a great time.
Can't do New Jersey without a diner dinner.

Finale.

June 6, Woodstown.

A surprise.

June 6, Woodstown.

Vickie and Lucky Eddie surprised Fridman last night with a little birthday party.
Most of the performers went to see the other circus right after our last show closed and they had invited us, along with Katherine North, who had been visiting and left this morning, for a night cap afterward.
Fridman was delighted.
It is the first surprise birthday party he's ever had.

Business.

June 5, Leola.

Business had been good, or at least reasonable, these past few weeks, but these two days in Leola, where we have no sponsor, attendance has been dismal.
There is another circus five miles away, the Lewis and Clark Circus (Rebecca is there,) and they have a sponsor, which may or may not have been a factor.

My stars.

June 4, Leola.

The Amish farm country in front of us was lit by an army of fireflies last night and Dylan rushed in from the Poemas to tell me then went gamboling around, trying to catch them (and did.) He looked like a lamb first out in the field.
Fireflies, butterflies, ladybugs and stars, my suns Dylan and Nicolas like to point them out, and the other night Nicolas excitedly showed me a lone star then asked: What does it eat?
The two of them also like to find the moon in the approaching dusk.
Dylan says it's following him.

Champ.

June 3, Strasburg.

It's the biggest piece of news of the year for us and I didn't even report it.
Yesterday Nicolas went all day without a diaper, asking to go potty every time and at the end of the day even going there all by himself.
So. Months of unsuccessful trying and then one day is all it took (for today he went on as if he had been doing this all his life, clean as a whistle.)

Trains.

June 3, Strasburg.

There was a school trip today to a train museum, the Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania. I took both Dylan and Nicolas there and it was like living the movie The Polar Express, their favorite of the year, with all the impressive, beautifully restored old locomotives and coaches.
Unfortunately I became utterly sick half-way through the visit and ended up spending the day back home in bed with a killing headache and nausea, but the kids had a great time.
There was even a Mister Conductor asking for "Tickets, please!"

More BBQ.

June 2, Shiloh.

Armando's other sister, Mona, stopped by today too with her family, and there was a BBQ at the Poemas for the occasion.
The Poema connection: circus people all know each other, the old cliché, and in this case Armando's wife's family, the Fuscos, are from Argentina, like Adrian Poema, and thus the two families are life-time acquaintances and friends.

The elephants (show.)

June 2, Shiloh.

The elephants.

June 2, Shiloh.

Carson and Barnes leases their elephants to circuses around the country and Jason stopped by on his way to shuttle elephants between shows, so that Kelly Miller presented a six-elephant act today.

Maté.

June 2, Shiloh.

The Fuscos always sit down for maté in the morning. Maté is an infusion drunk in most of South America, particularly in Argentina and Uruguay.
